Day One
/Day 1 - Meeting with the Ambassador
February 13th, 2020
Our mission to Peru started with an insightful meeting with Ambassador Ralph Jasen and Trade Commissioner Eve Giguère at the Embassy of Canada to Peru. They provided our team with an overview of Peru’s political landscape and economic development, Canada's effort in strengthening ties with Peru and promoting equal rights abroad through various approaches.
We started our meeting with the Ambassador introducing the role of the Embassy of Canada in Peru. Amongst the diverse range of work the embassy does here, the embassy primarily focuses on six priorities: prosperity between countries through trades and investment, diversity, environment, supporting Canadians, managing resources, democracy and good government.
The Ambassador and Trade Commissioner also walked us through Peru’s competitive advantages, as well as the challenges that exist in the country. Peru is gifted with vast varieties of natural resources, including minerals like silver and copper that enable Peru’s economy to flourish. As an extension of Canada, the embassy also helps address the social issues in Peru, which include corruption, inequality, as well as discrimination towards minority communities. They work to address these issues by promoting programs that support women and young girls, as well as including clauses in corporate agreements that ensure labour rights are protected.
This meeting provided us with some incredibly valuable information, as well as a comprehensive context for our upcoming meetings throughout our mission.
